 Molten

At six, I caught the end
of a news report
-- volcanoes on Mars.
The idea thrilled me,
filled me to the brim
with dreams of space,
alien explorers brave
enough to climb
a mountain
of fire.
I saw myself
scuffing sneakers
with copper dirt,
armed with a compass
and plastic canteen,
as I searched through
the dense curtain of stars
for a way home.
That night, I woke
with nightmares of lava
pouring down to the surface
of earth like rain.
