for E. Elias Merhige

it's quite the handsome mess when we sleepwalk in soil,
in the new earth tones we scrape
from our jazz feet

these colors
make us dance so         a b r a c a d a b r a ,
hand in hand with beautiful snakes

bitter buttons

tansies grow from my fingertips and                  there's nothing i can do about it
but let's downplay the phenomena, this arousal
and admire these roots, these tendrils
